Rikugien Garden, Bunkyo

4.3
#7 of 254 in Parks in Tokyo
Stroll through Rikugien Garden, a peaceful oasis inspired by poetry in the heart of Tokyo. Signage in English explains the connection between the gardens and excerpts of poetry, as you enjoy the scenery of cherry blossoms and the park's small pond. The park really shines during the autumn months, as lights illuminate the red and orange hues of the foliage after dark. You can find amenities throughout the garden, including snack stalls and restrooms. To visit Rikugien Garden on your trip to Tokyo, use our Tokyo trip tool .

  • Was lucky enough to get there for autumn illumination display. Magical atmosphere! The place is neat and elegant, as a classical Japanese garden would be.  more »
  • Whether it is spring or autumn, the scenery here is so charming and so that people forget to return. In such an international metropolis, to have such a beautiful courtyard is really a happy one. It is recommended that you can have cherry in the spring and a red leaf in the fall!

  • One of the very best Japanese "strolling gardens" in Tokyo, especially in November and early December when the maples are at their reddest.  more »

  • A surprisingly large and well-managed garden in the middle of seemingly nowhere. This garden is surrounded by walls and once I was able to find the entrance and paid the entrance fee, I was surprised by the sheer size of what's within the walls. Aside from the explanation of the history of this garden, the garden itself looks very similar to other Japanese gardens. Which, definitely is not a bad thing as it is quite tranquil and relaxing. Definitely worth a visit.
  • Beautiful garden with a gentle path around a lake. There are different types of trees planted that are the focus of the park at various seasons. The cherry blossoms are for spring, and the maple and ginko for Fall. I visited in Fall and the maples near the bridge were the best. Fall colors peaked a couple of weeks before my visit. Still it was beautiful.
  • Rikugien Park is one great place to visit during autumn. The lively colors give the park a relaxing and laid back athmosphere. Sitting by the lake side area is soothing for the soul. So serene. The park patrol can be a little bit strict in hearding the tourists around but all in the name of safety. I will definitely come back here again to see the illuminations next time.
  • Lovely park at only 2 minutes from Komagome station. There is a fee of 300 yen but still the park is really peaceful. They were some traditional music when I went there. There is also a nice tea house. Perfect place for relaxing or go with your family
  • Finally I got to visit Rikugien despite having visited TKO may times. This garden is off the bitten track and does not get mention often in guide books. I never made it for the day time view but had to sample something better, the delightful autumn light up whereby the whole forest part is transformed into a fairytale land with millions of fairy lights and other illumination. This really gives a whole new perspective to the saying 'a walk in the park'! On it's own, Rikugien is a simple layout that's exemplary of the Japanese zen garde when less is more. I was somewhat in awe with the serenity and subtleness of the whole experience. Very sublime...will definitely go back to see what's its like in the day. Absolutely brilliant!🙏🙋🌸
