Himeji Castle, Himeji

A World Heritage Site, Himeji Castle represents the largest structure of its kind in Japan. Constructed in the 14th century, the grandiose castle underwent several major reconstructions since then, surviving two scheduled demolitions, the 1945 bombings, and an earthquake. Admire the imposing structure from the outside, or roam the well-kept interior and labyrinthine garden paths. • Himeji City White, like a castle, we take Jr to Himeji to walk to Himeji city, when the drizzle, it's a little inconvenient to play umbrella, but we still go, we went into the city, there are instructions to get rid of shoes, so remember to wear sock oh, and then with the crowd has been the highest level of Upper city, I do not remember how many layers , because it's a bit long and tiring, but you can see the inside of the city, and the view from the top, I think it can be a line, if you are Huang.

  • A short walk from the train station is this world heritage listed castle. Going in the inter meant no crowds and so plenty of time to view all levels (instead of being herded about as we were last tim...  more »
  • The castle is definitely on the to-see-list. It is one of the rare castles that are original and was not just rebuilt after the 2nd world war. The other original castles (e.g. Matsumoto, Kochi, Inuyam...  more »

  • I visited when it was under renewal and it was quite amazing to see the traditional craftsmanship in progress and the sheer magnitude of the work. Visiting again after the renewal is complete, it’s a truly impressive and beautiful sight. It was a great experience to climb up through the castle keep and experience the grandeur and deep history that is evident in the very stones, timbers and textures of the place. With a bit of imagination it transports you if ever so briefly into another era.
  • A truly magnificent place and one of the most beautiful sights I saw in the country. The castle and the grounds are impeccably maintained and very peaceful and delightful to visit. The castle interior is mostly empty with just a few exhibits and plaques which, in my opinion, was the right balance of preserving the space without too much clutter getting in the way. Beautiful views of the city from the castle, but there's many relatively steep staircases so consider this before visiting the interior. A 15-minute walk from Himeji Station, and the walk is very pleasant with shops, restaurants, and pretty statues along the sidewalk. Truly a world treasure.
  • Spectacular castle and grounds. Take a day/half-day trip or stop off on your way to/from Hiroshima. You can leave bags at the station. More impressive than Matsumoto Castle. Don't miss the gardens next door to the castle. They are seriously beautiful, maybe the most beautiful gardens we've seen in Japan.
  • If you've been to other castles around Japan, you'd be amazed at the massive compound Himeji castle sits on. It's undergoing progressive restoration, so there may be spots where it's closed off to the public. There is a entrance fee, and it's fair for such an impressive structure. You can make your way up to the top floor to get a feel of how it'd be living in a castle. Highly recommended to stop at Himeji for a night or two to visit this and the nearby mount Shosha.
  • The castle is outright massive. Himeji is the most impressive original castle in Japan and certainly the largest and most intact. The roof tiles and gates are stunning and the inside of the castle is filled with giant wooden beans and weapons racks. Game of thrones should have filmed here. 2nd time doesn't change the fact that this place is simply awe inspiring. Also yes the castle will almost always be busy but the castle and its grounds are also large enough to accommodate the a large amount of people. It will not be difficult to get some great shots.
