Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Hiroshima

For a sobering reminder of the horrors of nuclear warfare, visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. One of the museum's two wings details the history of Hiroshima, the development of and decision to use the bomb, and the following discussions surrounding nuclear warfare and disarmament. The other wing goes into detail about the devastating damage and longer-term effects of the bomb. Don't miss the A-Bomb dome on site, one of the few buildings in the area that has been left in the same condition since the day of the bombing. • Definitely should be on your list if you happen to visit Japan and of course have the time. Once you reach Hiroshima station you will find volunteers who will guide you - the nicest bunch of guys a tourist can hope to meet. If you have a Japan Rail Pass then you can go around Hiroshima for free as there is a bus which operates on 3 routes - Orange, Green and Yellow. It's a hop- on/hop-off. You can cover everything worthwhile to visit at Hiroshima with this bus without spending a dime on taxis or buses if you have the Japan Rail Pass.
  • A very honest and sobering museum, with lots of information about atomic bombs not just the one dropped on Hiroshima. I found the section with peoples items and stories of being affected by the atomic bomb most moving. The whole museum was informative and well laid out. Very worth visiting if you are in the area.
  • Was expecting great things for this place but half of the museum was closed for renovations, it was extremely busy and repetitive information. Could have learnt more from reading things on the web. The audio guide wasn't worth it, it just spoke through all the writing on the museum walls. The good areas was the downstairs area on stories of victims. Hopefully once the renovations are complete it is more worthwhile.
  • Since I was a kid I've always been fascinated by the WW2 and visiting Hiroshima was probably the greatest experience ever, the city is modern but they don't forget what happened on August 6 at 8h15 am. The museum is free and if you take time to read all the texte inside you'll be fascinated. To add in your Japan trip checklist!
  • This museum is a must if you are in Japan. Please be respectful and do not take selfies here. This place is about respect and contemplating, not for your selfie. The museum is under renovation which limits the experience to what it originally was but still was good. The previous museum was more intense which I thought was better. The current display is more toned down. I highly recommend going though and can't wait for the new museum to open.
