Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Hiroshima

#1 of 3,164 in Museums in Japan
For a sobering reminder of the horrors of nuclear warfare, visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. One of the museum's two wings details the history of Hiroshima, the development of and decision to use the bomb, and the following discussions surrounding nuclear warfare and disarmament. The other wing goes into detail about the devastating damage and longer-term effects of the bomb. Don't miss the A-Bomb dome on site, one of the few buildings in the area that has been left in the same condition since the day of the bombing. • After visiting the remains of what was once the first nuclear bombing in the history of mankind, the museum traces the moments before and after effects of that immense tragedy, the suffering of those who survived that peri ' but above all ' Holocaust nuclear. If you go to Japan go see it!

  • If you are in Hiroshima make sure you include this in your itinery. Displayed are well laid out and explain in detail the circumstances of what happened. Very information but also emotional.  more »
  • We weren’t sure what to expect. We found the museum to be very good. It is laid out very well. Be sure to give yourself at least 1-3 hours to really take in the history and to read all the signs. It’s...  more »

  • Saying I "loved it" would be far from the truth. But make no mistake, this is one of the most moving places I've ever been to. Seeing the horrors that this city has gone through is an astonishing experience. But it's seeing their commitment to making sure that it never happens again that makes it particularly heart wrenching. Easily one of the most important museums you could ever visit.
  • A much needed reminder for the world about the perils of war. The park is a peaceful and tranquil place and instead of just highlighting the horrors of the nuclear bomb, it reminds people of what is at stake. May the souls of the innocent who perished due to the war rest in peace.
  • If you are in Hiroshima and want to experience something other than the A-Dome, this is the place to go. Very informative about what has happened here in Hiroshima. And with a learning message to take home.
  • MUST GO to this museum if you are in Hiroshima. Tells you the history from the Japanese point of view. From the US developing their nuclear programme, to the lead-up of the bombings in WW2, to the damage of the bombs, to the restoration process including recorded personal accounts with English translations everywhere. Only JPY200 per adult. Expect it to be very crowded. Hopefully the main building will be open soon and there will be more space.
  • This place still bring back memories even after 9 years. I find Japanese culture to be beautiful and forgiving. If you are in the area, it is worth the visit.
