Meiji Jingu Shrine, Shibuya

4.5
#1 of 2,120 in Things to do in Tokyo
Pay your respects to the deified Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, at Meiji Jingu Shrine, a Shinto shrine surrounded by a forested area crisscrossed with peaceful walking paths. At the temple itself, visitors give offerings, buy amulets and charms, and reflect on and write out their wishes. Walk through the treasure house to see belongings of the emperor and empress, and visit the museum annex next door, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Note that photography is not permitted within the temple’s halls. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Tokyo holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Meiji Jingu Shrine and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Our visit co-incided with an ice carving exhibition along the entrance path and a traditional Japanese wedding procession into the shrine. Remarkable.  more »
  • Nice bit of Japanese culture, walking distance from Shibuya. We saw ice carvings (winter) and enjoyed the hour or so we spent there.  more »
  • It's best to go in daylight. We arrived thirty minutes prior to closing so we had to rush through. No fee to enter.  more »

  • PSA: The main temple is undergoing renovation for its reopening in 2020, so be prepared to not be able to visit the main temple building. This is easily one of my top tourist attractions in Tokyo, despite me not being able to visit the main temple building due to renovation works. The entire area housing the shrine is huge, where guests need to walk past tall forest trees and gravel roads before reaching the shrine. Meiji Shrine does not feel like the metropolitan Tokyo at all, with it being surrounded by nature. It felt like I was out in the countryside. Really enjoyed the serene and peaceful vibe given off by this place, as well as the fresh air. A good break from the hectic atmosphere of Tokyo where you can just stroll leisurely and admire the nature and historical building. Just make sure to bring water, some snacks and dress comfortably as there is quite a bit of walking involved.
  • One step inside the massive tori gate and you realize why this is one of the top places to visit in Japan. Truly beautiful shrine and you can get omikuji in the form of a poem. If you are in Tokyo this is a must visit!
  • A very serene and quiet place in the middle of a bustling city. A very nice park to have a walk and to take a break from the crowds in the city. A beautiful shrine (but it was under renovation when I went so didn't see too much).
  • At the heart it's just a shrine like any other, but the somewhat long walk that it takes to get there makes it seem cooler. There's fortunes in English inside for only ¥100, as well as many other souvenirs you can buy. Access to the well and park has a ¥500 entrance fee. Nice, famous place to visit if you have the chance.
  • A beautiful shrine to the emperor, we witnessed I believe a traditional marriage with all the beautiful kimonos and dresses and family members alongside them. There are plenty of activities to do around the shrine, with plenty of wishing panels to write on for prayers to lift up for the monks, many places for prayers and respect.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.
