Ueno Park, Taito

4.4
#2 of 254 in Parks in Tokyo
Nature / Park Must See
A hub of cultural attractions, Ueno Park originally served as the gardens of the Kaneiji Temple during the Edo period. In 1873 it opened to the public as one of the first Western-style parks. An island temple to the goddess of fortune and beauty floats in its pond, while the national museum and art museum stand as bastions of Japan's rich heritage. Rest up between cultural sightseeing, stop by the zoo, or visit the market under the elevated train line. In the spring, join the flocks of visitors enjoying the over 800 blossoming cherry trees. • Quiet peaceful park surrounding the Shinobazu pond. Very safe day or night, with a large part away from the pond that seems to go on for ever.  more »
  • A wonderful place with nice scenery. There are some temples located around the area where you can buy lucky charms and other small trinkets. There’s also a sort of lake, with ducks, seagulls and large...  more »
  • In the area of the park, you can walk before you enter the Ueno Zoo. Unfortunately, the flowering season, otherwise it should be more beautiful. The pool Lotus flower has not yet opened, but can not think of the summer is full of garden flowers in the situation

  • I visited this extremely large park during the shoulder season in end of August 2017. It's a very pleasant place. There's a museum, zoo, and large open spaces to hold festivals and events (there's one celebrating cultures of Nepal when I came). You can easily spend the whole first half of the day here. Don't be afraid to lose your way. Map and signs are plentiful, as is almost anywhere else in Japan.
  • Very big park with nice landscapes and activities. The couple of shrines I visited are we'll manage and we'll kept. There is also a Starbucks cafe at the park, but the queue is very long.
  • Massive park with temples, zoo and beautiful gardens. This is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Great choice for families however there is lots of walking so be aware that the kids may get tired.
  • Beautful and fun. Really enjoyed the zoo. Definitely a must if you're in Ueno.
  • If you visit Tokyo, I highly encourage you to enjoy the beauty of this park. The Japanese do a wonderful job in grooming their gardens, and this is no exception. One of the most scenic times of year to vist this is late March, early April when the sakura are in blossom. It's just beautiful here! Many Japanese bring boxed lunches and enjoy sitting in the grass here and eating their snacks or lunches. SO if you can come and visit, bring some food and drinks and just take time to relax in this oasis of natural beauty in the middle of busy Tokyo. It's a very Japanese thing to do! Don't expect much inside as far as food sales, so try to buy your food before you get to the park.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.
