Routeburn Track, Te Anau

4.9
#1 of 14 in Trails in Southland Region
Hike across a variety of landscapes by following Routeburn Track, a renowned rainforest route in New Zealand. Most visitors take two to four days to cover the 32 km (20 mi) track, but you can also tackle shorter sections of it before returning to the starting point on the Queenstown side of the Southern Alps. Classified as one of the country's "Great Walks," this hiking route includes several huts and campsites along the way. Prepare for the route's long-distance views by charging your camera, or bring binoculars to see ever farther. If you choose to visit in the winter, remember that the track's alpine sections may require advanced mountaineering skills. Plan a Te Anau trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • The biggest problem in this track is probably the costly shuttle service as start and end are so far apart. We have extended the Routeburn about the Caples Track for 2 days. Despite heavy rain, we could see the breathtaking landscape! We want to make it again in good weather. It with a little fitness in 2 days well to create the track kan.

  • This 32km hike is considered along with Milford Sound and Kepler among top 3 in New Zealand and it is absolutely justified. You can run it in a day, but a much more immersive experience would be to hike it so that you can appreciate the splendour of the views and changing landscapes the trail allows you to discover. It is commonly recommended as a 3 days/2 nights hike, however if you are somewhat an experienced hiker/backpacker you may enjoy a slightly faster pace 2 days/1 night, staying over at Mackenzie lake hut or camping site, which is the nicest hut (and view) on the trail with all necessary amenities.
  • My goal was to make it to Harris Saddle and come back in one day but winter is here and right after Routeburn Falls Hut, the path was covered in ice and since you can't really walk on the side of the track, that was really dangerous. Even with my trekking poles I had to stop there and go back. It was a beautiful day though, cold but no clouds. If you do try to challenge it, you'll probably need more than 2h from this Hut to Harris Saddle, be really careful!
  • Probably the best walking track in New Zealand if the weather is good
  • One of the most scenic, spectacular walks I have ever done.
  • A challenging track to run. It had 4 seasons in one day, and the conditions underfoot always required my full attention! Very rocky, and often slippery when wet, but it's a very scenic area, and the views when not cloudy are spectacular!
