First, Grindelwald

4.8
#1 of 11 in Winter Sports in Canton of Bern
Use First as a starting point for many scenic hikes and ski trails in the Swiss Alps. Sitting above the mountain village of Grindelwald, the summit is quickly reachable by gondola railway and provides panoramic views of the surrounding snow-covered peaks. From here you have access to over 60 km (37 mi) of ski slopes and about 40 km (25 mi) of marked footpaths. Have a bite to eat at the on-site restaurant or relax on the sun terrace with seats for up to 300 people. Instead of hiking or taking the railway back to Grindelwald, descend on the 800 m (2,624 ft) zipline, which races down the mountain at speeds exceeding 80 km/h (50 mph). Put First on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Grindelwald travel planner.

  • We try to do the route hoping to see marmots with the girls. The truth is that the start of the path is very poorly signposted (rare in Switzerland, but it is fatal). After the panel to photograph you like "family Marmot", the road separates; one descends into a narrow road and another climbs into a wider track. There is no sign more than one indicating that it is a path, you already know that, and there is some fluorescent arrows painted on the ground indicating the path below... Error... That is not... Shortly after we began to suspect him because you reach a road... But it was late... When you reach the end of the trail of the marmot, we returned back to try to see them, instead of going to Grosse Scheidegg. We add quite a few meters to the route, and a few slopes that was trying to save my daughters, but in the end could see marmots. The road is beautiful, with patience, tranquility and binoculars marmots are, but I think that it would be desirable to improve the signs at that intersection. Agree several families disoriented at that point...

  • In a place difficult to differentiate what mountain is better and which worse. Chic look, a convenient lift. Hiking trails, Lake, rocks, views of the Jungfrau. Than Count differs from other is mountain attraction. Fly on a tightrope, a paraglider. take the tricycle ride and cycling. Any whim for your money, but it will make your day. Where else can you so have fun and with such views. More budgetary and buy a one way ticket and bring a personal bike-will be fun!

  • I visited First back in 1984. Coming from Australia I was just awestruck by the incredible beauty and sheer ruggedness of the Eiger. Taking the 1/2 hour chairlift ride to the summit was fantastic, not even sure if they have that particular chairlift anymore, but it wasn't terribly high off the ground and watching the little dams and hearing the cow bells left me with enduring memories I shall never forget. Even as a 21 year old I felt humbled and so lucky to have been able to visit such an amazing place.
  • What a great hike from Grindelwald up to the top! It was about 4h with some stops & breaks. Some parts of the hike were tough but overall a great experience.
  • Amazing views, don't miss this. Rode the cable car to the top ($30), hiked to the lake and back, and had the choice of walking down, taking cable car, or renting different toys to ride down.
  • Beautiful place, better to go in the morning, Bachalpsee is frozen in June
  • Never miss this place in Swiss trip Amazing rides rop way cycling pond Unforgettable experience Best scene of nature while coming down by bicycle
