Mt Pilatus, Lucerne

4.7
#2 of 66 in Things to do in Lucerne
For panoramic views of Lucerne and the surrounding region, take the world's steepest cogwheel railway to the top of Mt Pilatus. During medieval times locals believed that a dragon lived at the summit of this soaring massif; several 17th-century accounts tell of a winged creature flying between the mount's caves. Today the towering mountain draws visitors with its walking trails, which range from extremely steep and challenging scrambles for serious adrenaline junkies, to easy hikes for everyone else. On clear days the hiking paths offer views that stretch as far as the Black Forest in southwestern Germany. You can also reach the summit by riding the aerial cableway or the panorama gondola, departing from the town of Kriens. According to the predictions would be going to rain all week so on the first sunny day we are gone. Unfortunately, there was as much cloud cover on top of the Pilatus that we could see almost nothing of the view. Very nice flowers route right past a cliff (be careful with small children). Dragons way is very nice through the caves. Down we had to wait an hour on the next train. Free tourist square with a lot of wasps. O and it is anything but cheap, but please note because your ticket is valid for several days!

  • Really nice view, even that it was cloudy but you could see the rest of the peaks around. It's very peaceful up there. The restaurant at the top didn't have too many options but there is another one before you reach the top that seems to be better
  • very beautiful place, must visit if you come to Lucerne
  • THIS WAS AMAZING. The view is 10/10. Have a beer on top and enjoy. Too bad they closed the gondolas for repair the week i was there! Recomended
  • Even on a partly cloudy day there were spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. I recommend taking the cable car up one side of the mountain and takimg the train down the other side. The hiking and biking opportunities are also amazing. You will not waste your time here. There are also two hotels near the mountaintop.
  • Coolest place I've been. Took the Cog train up and gondolas down on the golden express ticket. Easily worth it.

Where to stay in Lucerne

Small, historical Lucerne is big in its accommodation offerings. Surrounding the bay are plenty of mid-range and upscale hotels for those looking to splurge, putting you right downtown with easy access to sights, bars, and restaurants. If your budget is tight, look into the handful of guesthouses in the city. There are limited hostels available, and they tend to be a bit farther from the city core. Be sure to book in advance to avoid missing out.
