You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Eikando Zenrinji Temple and Yasaka Shrine. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Osaka (Universal Studios Japan & Osaka Castle). And it doesn't end there: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera, take in the spiritual surroundings of Fushimi Inari Taisha, don't miss a visit to Gion, and explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle.

Brandon, Canada to Kyoto is an approximately 30-hour flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 15 hours traveling from Brandon to Kyoto. A tiny island in the Yae-yama archipelago, Taketomi-jima enjoys popularity as a beach getaway, best known for its stretches of "star sand"--sand made up of tiny star-shaped exoskeletons of ancient fossils.
On the 8th (Tue), appreciate the history behind Dr. Takeshi Sakiyama Memorial Monument and then enjoy the sand and surf at Kaiji Beach. On your second day here, go for a stroll along the water at Taketomi Port, get great views at Nagomi Tower, then take a leisurely stroll along Nishi Pier, and finally stroll through Kondoi Beach.

Traveling by combination of train, flight, and ferry from Hiroshima to Taketomi-jima Taketomi-cho takes 5 hours. In August, daily temperatures in Taketomi-jima Taketomi-cho can reach 37°C, while at night they dip to 32°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 10th (Thu) so you can catch the ferry to Ishigaki.

Miyakojima

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Step off the beaten path and head to Sunayama Beach and Irabu Bridge. There's lots more to do: stroll through Aragusuku Beach, don't miss a visit to East Henna Cape, snap pictures at Ikema Ohashi Bridge, and enjoy the sand and surf at Toguchi no Hama.

Getting from Nakijin-son to Teshikaga-cho by combination of car, flight, and taxi takes about 7 hours. Other options: do a combination of car and ferry. Plan for a bit cooler temperatures traveling from Nakijin-son in August, with highs in Teshikaga-cho at 28°C and lows at 22°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 24th (Thu) so you can go by car to Shari-cho.
