Churchill War Rooms, London

4.6
At Churchill War Rooms, see how Winston Churchill and his inner circle directed the British war effort from this bunker complex. In the Cabinet War Rooms, which served as Churchill's living quarters, look for the chair--with scratch marks on its arms--in which Sir Winston sat while strategizing with his closest advisers. The books, color-coded telephones, and documents on desks in the Map Room remain just as they were when the bunker emptied on August 16, 1945. Moving on to the Churchill Room, see where Churchill slept while in the bunker. In the Churchill Museum, learn all about the life of the leader who guided Britain through one of the most trying periods of its history. The site does not have a cloakroom, so expect to carry or wear whatever you bring with you. • As a WWII history buff, this was a can't miss for me and it was worth it. So cool to see all the rooms that were used during WWII to defeat the Nazis while they were being bombed overhead. Didn't do t...  more »
  • In the beginning when I realised we had to pay 19 pounds to get in I was going to leave, but to be honest it was worth it. The detail and the history behind everything there is fascinating. The audio ...  more »
  • There is so much information on Churchill and the war that you could spend 1-2 hours at the museum. There were photos from the war. This was the actual location of the bunker.  more »

  • Very interesting and informative.. you need a lot of time to spend reading ALL the facts/info etc held in the exhibition but all still very interesting. The waxwork models and the working/living areas of the bunker are a very cool interpretation of how it must of been down there at the time. Not great for smaller kids. Adults will love it. Was full of old boys and girls the day I went. Would recommend.
  • This was probably my favorite place I visited in London. It was very cool to see the underground war rooms. Also, during the self-guided tour there was a Churchill Museum, which chronicled his life. I thought that it would take no longer than an hour to go through, but it took my wife and I 3.5/4hours to see/ listen to everything . They also had an audio hand held, which complimented the tour very well. We bought our tickets on line to skip the wait. It was a great experience and I would highly recommend it.
  • What a wonderful experience. If you're anything like me you'll want to spend a long time in the central display and information area. Extremely good and full of information and displays. Well worth every penny but give yourself time, there's a lot to see and read and take in.
  • Fascinating and highly detailed museum which is definitely well worth a visit but do come at opening time to avoid the queues. There is more here about Churchill's life and particularly his famous role in WWII than you can possibly absorb at one visit, though that makes it no less worthwhile spending time here. It is located in the Cabinet Way Rooms bunker under HM Treasury, so it's an unusual and atmospheric location in any event. Nice café, though not many were using the one we stopped in. Do go, arrive promptly and take your time but don't overdo it, especially if you're on a tourist tick list trip. Enjoy!!
  • Very interesting museum with good audio guide which is always a bonus. In the Churchill section its a bit of a confusing layout and too much yo read. Also there really should be more chairs for people with mobility issues and the guard at the entrance needs a lesson in equality! The cafe was fairly expensive but the coffee very good. All in all definitely worth a visit but get there early to avoid the queues.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
