Imperial War Museum, London

4.3
#7 of 218 in Museums in London
Imperial War Museum helps visitors understand the British wartime experience by documenting the country's roles in World Wars I and II. Originally established in 1917 to memorialize British sacrifice in World War I, the museum expanded to record an even greater sacrifice a little over two decades later. Throughout the complex, you can view documents such as official orders, letters, diaries, and memoirs, as well as artwork including paintings, photographs, and sculptures. Listen to some of the 33,000 oral-history recordings and view over 350 vehicles and aircraft on display. World War I gallery exhibits a recreated trench. If the weather's agreeable, eat in the cafe, which opens out onto the Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park. • It had been a few years since our last visit and it’s much improved. The WW1 exhibition is excellent, we learned so much from this that we’d not appreciated before. The remainder of the museum covers ...  more »

  • Absolutely surreal... Incredible immersion in the WW1 exhibit, pictures and videos simply wouldn't do it justice. Great WW2 and onwards exhibits as well, but the WW1 section is most definitely the star of the show and is absolutely breathtaking. No pictures are allowed in the Holocaust exhibit, but if it's still around when you go, I would absolutely recommend going. Would visit again even if nothing changes... Totally worth every second spent there.
  • What a place! Very informative about different wars. My son especially found the world war 1 exhibit good. They have a massive holocaust exhibition also, very informative but very sad at the same time. Easy to find and tube stations located near by. And best of all its free entry!
  • Wow, I can't believe this place is free. It is one of the best war museums I have been to. We were there for over 2 hours and we only saw a quarter of what there was to see. We will be going back to gradually see the rest. The displays are amazing and everything is done in such a thorough way. Absolutely worth a visit or 5.
  • Really well curated!! So many interesting things to see! Especially the secret spies section!! The holocaust exhibit is one of the most intense i have ever seen. Very emotional and also informative.
  • Amazing exhibitions and mostly free (I think there was a charge for one hall). A great day out for the family but some exhibitions (like the Holocaust memorial) may not be appropriate for young children as this is obviously quite a grim period of history. Well designed exhibitions and a good gift shop.
