#11 of 222 in Museums in London
An impressively preserved, ornate structure built in the 1850s, National Portrait Gallery contains a collection of portraits painted of significant and famous British people. Perhaps the most notable portrait in the gallery is one of William Shakespeare, but there are approximately 10,000 others to view and consider. • Great place a pop into for a short while, or spend a whole day. Lower floors often crowded, but other areas much quieter. Fantastic exhibitions held throughout the year.
  • I visited the National Portrait Gallery because they had a Caravaggio exhibition. It was such a pleasant surprise to find out that exhibition aside, the Gallery had a very extensive, well curated and very very beautiful collection. I joined the free docent tour in the afternoon and was touched by the sheer passion she had with the paintings. Her explanations made the world of paintings come alive! I loved how there were cross relations between certain paintings. Easter eggs existed even in centuries past! Well worth a visit. Bravo!
  • Fabulous gallery - free exhibitions as well as ones with admission prices. Could easily spend a morning or afternoon here.
  • Lovely ambiance, great art, decent enough food. Love their shop.
  • Regardless of whatever exhibition is going on in The National Portrait Gallery. It's a great place to visit when you are nearby. A lot of rooms to walk into for free, and the art on display is simply beautiful.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
