National Portrait Gallery, London

4.5
#11 of 220 in Museums in London
An impressively preserved, ornate structure built in the 1850s, National Portrait Gallery contains a collection of portraits painted of significant and famous British people. Perhaps the most notable portrait in the gallery is one of William Shakespeare, but there are approximately 10,000 others to view and consider. National Portrait Gallery is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, London Edition.

  • One of my favourite galleries in London. I visit with my family several times a year and there is always something exciting to see. Today we revisited the Tudors - simply beautiful & incrediblly detailed paintings. We also enjoyed the Creative Connections Nottingham photographs for their warm social realism. A stunning space which we will go back to time and time again.
  • An amazing gallery! Free entry. It's right next to the National Gallery, and you'll want to take your time to really appreciate both. If you can get one, I'd highly recommend a guided tour. Great history showcased through great art!
  • One of my favorite museums in London! Love the spacious gallery and tastefully curated galleries. This museum is a must visit for all, no matter if you're a museum lover or not. The paintings speak to you and you'll be amazed by the huge collection of arts throughout the different centuries.
  • Amazing and full of historical inspiration. It will take a few hours to walk through as the is so much to see and take in. Well worth a visit. Completely free unless you want to make a voluntary donation.
  • One of my favourite places in London is the National portrait gallery. You can always loose yourself finding new details on portraits you have seen before. There is truly something for everyone, from old masters to new contemporary portraits. Most of the museum is free barring the travelling exhibitions. Don't miss the cafe in the basement for good coffee and decent food.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
